JourneyCare Through a New Lens
Posted by Tina Le, Digital Specialist
I’m a new JourneyCare team member just three months into my role as a digital specialist, but our work in the Marketing Department has already allowed me to see our organization from all facets. Sometimes we create fancy graphics and posters for exciting events like this year’s Allstars of Project Runway fundraiser. Other times we help develop communication tools that help our clinicians do their jobs more efficiently. But one of my favorite projects so far has been photographing and documenting the great work JourneyCare continues to do in the community.
I recently had the opportunity to photograph a day at Camp Courage, our week-long bereavement camp for children who are grieving the loss of a loved one. While I was there, I got a small glimpse into what our clinical, social work and bereavement teams experience daily helping our patients’ families. Not only was the day packed with fun-filled activities like rock climbing and tie dye, it also provided campers a safe space to express their feelings. Throughout the day, there were activities that allowed counselors and campers to speak openly about death, grieving and how to cope with it.
During the Grief Gadget activity – where campers use odds and ends to craft a gadget that represents their loved one – one camper shared his project with me. After showing me all the different parts to his gadget and explaining how it worked to communicate with his late dad, he turned to me and said, “I know it doesn’t actually work – but it does in my world.”
I thanked him for sharing his project with me and reflected on what he said. Even at a young age, this camper used his imagination, creativity and newfound coping skills to deal with grief in a healthy way. Looking back on that moment now gives me a sense of gratitude to our amazing teams who spend hours planning programs and events to help grieving family members when they need it most. This motivates me even more to use my role for helping spread the word about JourneyCare to our communities and set these programs up for success.
Although I am new to JourneyCare, I can tell you one thing that is for sure: JourneyCare is a force. Our team is a well-oiled machine made up of passionate people wanting to make a difference in the lives of families everywhere. Whether it’s a nurse working directly with our patients or a tech specialist troubleshooting our app that lets patients communicate digitally with their care teams, everyone works together towards one common goal – to enrich lives through compassionate care. I look forward to the days and months to come working at JourneyCare, to opportunities help to those we serve and to learn even more along the way.
