Merci Beaucoup. Muchas Gracias. Danke. Thank You.
Volunteers at the 2018 Thank-a-Thon

The message was simple, but powerful. “Thank you” are the words our supporters heard when they picked up the phone on Thursday, January 25 during the JourneyCare Foundation’s annual Thank-a-Thon. Volunteers from throughout our agency – the Foundation, Board members, leadership and volunteers – spent the day calling our nearly 7,000 generous donors from the WTTW studios in Chicago to express our gratitude for all they make possible.

Thanks to them, JourneyCare always succeeds in achieving our mission of never turning anyone away due to inability to pay. Their gifts also fund programs that care for the mind, body and spiritnone of which are covered by insurance of any kind.

Last year, our philanthropists enabled us to provide approximately $6 million in unreimbursed services to adult and pediatric patients who were uninsured or underinsured, as well as holistic programs not covered by insurance that make JourneyCare so special.

These include programs like the art therapy that enabled patient Sandi Bounds to create scrapbooks for her family, so they could see themselves as she saw them. Sandi said the therapy also relieved her exhaustion and gave her motivation.

“Normally during the day, I am tired, but for art therapy, I am bright-eyed and bushy-tailed,” Sandi said. “It gives me something to look forward to.”

Donations also allow JourneyCare to provide specialized services for our military heroes through our We Honor Veterans program. Last year, a special veteran pinning ceremony was planned for patient Fred Deitsch, who served with the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam. Attending the ceremony were his sister Liz Richmond, a JourneyCare Bereavement Counselor, and his brother, Phil, also a U.S. Marine veteran, who flew in from out-of-state to honor Fred. The highlight came when JourneyCare surprised Fred and Phil by pinning them together to honor their service to the country.

“It really was such a wonderful experience for our family,” Liz said.

We hope that by calling our donors to share our personal thanks, they feel the impact their donations have on nearly 3,000 patients and their families each day. Our Thank-a-Thon is a way to give back to our donors who give so much to JourneyCare and make what we do possible.

Generous people make this world a better place and all the hospice care providers know this, how much and how crucial this help coming from these donors.

I received a thank you from JC on January 25. Since I was not at home they left a message. I wish I had been home because it was me who had so much gratitude to express to the JC organization. My darling mom spent the last 10 days of her life in the JC facility in Barrington IL. My 2 sisters and I were overwhelmed by the outpouring of comfort, kindness, and love shown to us by everyone there: volunteers, housekeeping, doctors, nurses, etc. My mother was alert for about 3 days before going into a peaceful and eventually permanent sleep. I slept there most nights and also during that time all grands and great grands visited. Friends came by too. It was like being at home. It was quite possibly the 10 most remarkable days of my life. The difficulty of saying goodbye was eased by the support and comfort shown to us. Than phonek you!
