Soup, Warmth and Comfort for Hospice Patients

Soup, Warmth and Comfort for Hospice Patients

JourneyCare's Soup & Stories initiative began five years ago when JourneyCare Juniors and adult volunteers from Barrington delivered containers of homemade soup, fleece blankets and conversation cards to the homes of JourneyCare patients on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Whenever Dr. Martin Luther King's Day of Service takes place,  I am reminded of all the ways I can serve the community and make the world a better place. As a JourneyCare Youth Advisory Board Volunteer, one activity I love to participate in during this holiday is the Soup and Stories deliveries. If this initiative has taught me one lesson, it’s that a little can go a long way.  Just a small package filled with soup, a blanket, and a card can brighten someone’s day and bring love, comfort and joy to a home.

My family and I have been participating in Soup and Stories for five years. We have been lucky enough to step inside some of the homes of JourneyCare patients and have heartfelt conversations with them and their families.

One memory I’ll never forget is meeting a 98-year-old man named Harold, being welcomed into his family room, and hearing all of his life experiences and advice while we ate Pirouette cookies. Seeing the look on his and all the patients' faces when they are given the care packages is such a humbling experience, and it goes to show that it’s the little things in life that mean the most.

Thank you to all of this year's Soup and Stories volunteers, including our JourneyCare South Juniors who helped pack the care packages to be delivered, and to our 2019 sponsors, Ryerson & OnePoint Patient Care!
