Laugh & Learn: Vital Healthcare Conversations
Life happens and for many of us that moment comes when the phone rings and suddenly our world is thrown upside down as we race to the rescue of a loved one or friend who has been diagnosed with a serious or terminal illness.
But you are not alone.
On Tuesday April 9, 2019, Julia Sweeney, the former Saturday Night Live comedian and author, (Pat) will share lessons learned through her brother’s struggle with terminal cancer and her own diagnosis of a rare cervical cancer, just weeks before his death. She knows up-close-and-personal what it’s like to juggle parenting a teenage daughter, being a wife, caregiving for her aging parents and struggling to keep her own well-being.
The evening promises to make you laugh and cry... and walk away knowing there is help, you're not in this alone... and there are some tangible things you can do to help your loved one and yourself on this journey.
“I know what it’s like when a loved one is dying, and everyone is pretending he is not dying and how painful that can be,” says Julia Sweeney, now age 58, who last summer moved back to Hollywood after living in Wilmette and raising her daughter with her husband during the last decade. “I’ve had three deaths in my immediate family and two were much less painful because we did some advanced planning and knew their wishes. I am very passionate about giving directives in advance, so your loved ones know what you want.”
Supported by philanthropic efforts and generous donors of JourneyCare, the annual event is among a series of programs held to educate the public on important issues when facing serious illness, end-of-life, and helping caregivers. Moderators Elise and Ron Magers will discuss with Sweeney how she turned to life-affirming humor and discovered her natural ability to create comedy from life’s cruel and frightening moments during her family members’ illnesses and end of life. She also will share lessons on what to do and what not to do in caring for someone with serious illness.
Life is a Journey will be held Tuesday, April 9, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the McDonald’s Campus/Hamburger University, 2715 Jorie Blvd. Oak Brook, Illinois. Tickets are $25 and include appetizers, refreshments and parking. For more information and tickets to the event go to Life is a Journey.
