A CNA’s Journey

A CNA’s Journey
JourneyCare CNAs, including Belinda Ka'tor (back row, center)

I've been a CNA since 1984, with 12 of those years dedicated to hospice. I have always enjoyed caring for people. My motto is: You get out of self by doing for others. My belief is that we are here to serve one another to the best of our ability.

This journey has been comforting. The name JourneyCare is so fitting — because the CNAs that are in the field are always on a journey to give care to another person. It has been a blessing that a group of individuals can come together as a team and be able to comfort, while respecting patient and family needs.

Our mission statement says it all; 'Enriching lives through expert and compassionate care.'

A hospice patient I’ll call Mary was someone who really touched my heart. I began caring for her while she was in assisted living. We talked and laughed about everything. She told me things that she didn't share with her family, which surprised them.

When her family asked about why patients open up with CNAs, my answer was: “Once you see them naked, they get naked about life, on life’s terms.”

This special lady and her family had been in our care for more than two years before she died.

She informed me of her relatives who came to visit. We discussed how they were preparing her to face the end of life. She told me when her dead husband came for a spiritual visit. And she told me she was leaving and thanked me for being in her life.
